To kick off the 2011 Holiday Gift Guide I thought it would only make sense to bring you a product that would come in handy this time of year due to all of the cooking and baking that’s going on.
Being someone who loves to cook and bake I’m always on the lookout for new products that help me create great tasting food. Isn’t that ultimately what we’re all after anyway?
One item in particular that every foodie should have in their kitchen is a scale. They’re not only great for dieters (for portion control) but if you love to bake as much as I do, the best way to accurate baking is through weighing out your ingredients.
As the saying goes “baking is a science.” That is SO true! Why? Well, there’s a difference between cooking and baking. With cooking, recipes are mere suggestions, flexible in their ingredients and proportions. Baking, on the other hand, is precise in measurements and techniques. Not to mention consistent in the end results.
The secret to successful baking? It’s all in the chemistry and if your measurements are off, you’ll wind up with many flops. That’s why it’s SO much better to weigh each ingredient before adding it to your dish. I guarantee, with this method and a good recipe, you’ll love the results!
If you’re looking for an affordable, quality kitchen scale, look no further than the Precision Pro Digital Kitchen Scale by EatSmart. It features 4 measurement units; grams, kilograms, ounces and pounds. Plus, has a maximum weight capacity of 11 pounds as well as a tare function that eliminates the weight of your plate.
I really like the compact size of the Precision Pro because it doesn’t take up a lot of my counter space. Something I’m a little limited on right now. The only negative side of a smaller scale is that if you’re using a larger bowl, it tends to block your LCD screen which can be a bit annoying. Most of the time I prefer to measure each ingredient individually on a small plate or bowl, unless I’m making a large batch of something such as for a holiday gathering or get together.
The tare feature really makes weighing SO easy because you don’t have to calculate the weight of your plate or bowl yourself. You just hit the tare button and it weighs that item, then deducts it from the total weight after adding your ingredient. Simple!
Something else I like is the battery-saving auto shut off feature. After 3 minutes the unit shuts off automatically so you can continue ‘doing your thing’ without worrying about burning up your batteries. It does take ordinary AAA batteries — that’s a super PLUS since lithium batteries cost more.
Converting between measurements is as easy as the push of button. And the large LCD screen makes reading a whole lot easier too.
The bottom of the scale includes 5 rubber feet that grip your counter, preventing the scale from sliding around while in use. Who wants to chase their ingredients around while they’re in the process of creating food? Definitely NOT me!
PERFECT GIFT FOR:
The avid cook or baker on your holiday shopping list. It’s simple, sleek, easy to use, and compact enough for any kitchen counter. Plus, it can even be used to calculate your postage.
Available in white, red, black chrome, white chrome and silver. Units come with a 2 year warranty.
