1382975896_bn-etymtc~ I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Etymotic. I received a product to facilitate my review and a promotional item as a thank you for participating. ~

Since my early 20’s I’ve suffered from hearing loss. I’m not totally hard of hearing by any means, but certain tones started becoming harder for me to distinguish, especially in a crowded room.

I was in a shopping mall the first time I noticed it and at that time my first thought was “oh, my ears must be a bit clogged.” But, after trying numerous times to clear them, I realized it wasn’t working. It became aggravating to say the least but I’ve learned over the years to just deal with it— muffled sounds and all.

Going out to restaurants, watching movies or my favorite tv shows, or even just sitting and carrying on a conversation can be daunting. Deep or quiet voices just don’t sound right. To me all I hear is Charlie Brown’s teacher “wha– wha wha wha– wha wha”. I find myself asking people to repeat what they’ve said and watching their mouths move during a conversation doesn’t help much, especially if they turn their heads.

Hubby has this bad habit of trying to talk to me when he’s in another room altogether– well, he might as well be talking to himself because I’m not hearing THAT conversation. After so many times of struggling to hear I just give up. They’re not talking a different language and I’m not understanding them so yea, what’s the point? UGH!!!

“It’s not that I’m not interested in the conversation, I just don’t understand you. Sorry!”

My family truly gets tired of the blaring tv. But unless it’s turned up and the surround sound is on, I might as well turn it off completely because there’s no enjoyment there. And phone conversations?— the caller might as well be from a foreign country because that’s a lost cause. Is there any end to all this madness? Grr….

I didn’t used to think so, but after being contacted by Mom Central Consulting about an Etymotic product called The BEAN, I’m feeling much more positive— and after having the opportunity to check it out, I’m hearing things I haven’t heard in years— crisper, clearer sound. And it’s SO beautiful— it’s music to my ears!

1.) The BEAN amplifier kit   2.) 7 eartip sets
3.) Leather case   4.) Inside case pocket

As you can imagine, after suffering for 20 years to decipher words, I didn’t have high hopes for this product but I’m always open and willing to try anything (at least once) so I tried to stay positive. I opened the packaging, read the directions and inserted The BEAN into my right ear canal. Then I sat down on the couch to watch a movie. What I heard next was AHH-mazing. I heard… YES I heard voices and I could understand each and every word. OH MY was that totally awesome!

I didn’t want to stop there so I walked into the kitchen to see if I could hear from a distance and sure enough, I heard the tv clear as crystal. I couldn’t help but get all teary eyed. Now I don’t want to sound like an infomercial but The BEAN really DOES work!

This tiny little bean-shaped sound amplifier makes small sounds and words “bigger”. Not blaring to the point of making you jump, but they no longer sound like “mumbo-jumbo”. I can understand them and it’s SO exciting. Oh yeah, my family doesn’t have to scream at the top of their lungs during a movie or sound like a broken record when they’re trying to communicate with me now either. Woohoo!

1.) In comparison to my hand   2.) Side view to show setting switch
3.) Battery door   4.) Inserted battery

To get started, first you remove all of the parts from the package. With The BEAN you get 7 ear tips in different sizes and materials which you can try. You’ll want to choose the pair that fits deep into the ear canal so there are no background noises to interfere with your reception.

Next, insert a size #10 zinc-air battery (included in the package) into the unit by opening the battery door– remove the yellow tab from the battery first. Then close the door. The flat side of the battery should be facing up.

The next step is very important, to insert the amplifier, you pull up and out on the top portion of your ear with one hand and (with a twisting motion) position the device into your ear canal making sure the device is in the horizontal position with the “switch” facing toward the back of your ear.

While you’re getting The BEAN seated you may hear a whistling noise but once the ear piece has fully sealed around your ear canal the noise should go away. Deeply seated eartips reduce the “hollow” sound in your voice.

Now you should be hearing what you’ve been missing. If at any time you need a boost, just simply flip the switch from the normal setting (facing the front of the device) to the high setting (facing the back of the device). If you can’t locate the switch while it’s in your ear just simply remove it and adjust the setting, then reinsert it.

The BEAN is meant for those who, like myself, need a little help in certain situations. It’s not meant to act as a hearing aid for those who suffer total or nearly complete hearing loss. If you find yourself avoiding social situations, have difficulty understanding speech, or turn the tv or radio up louder just to enjoy it, YOU are the ideal user for The BEAN!

This amplifier is also not meant to be used all day, every day— only when you need it most. It provides high-frequency amplified hearing for the soft sounds of speech in both quiet and noisy conditions.  And because it’s designed to fit comfortably and smoothly in the ear canal, it’s nearly undetectable.

I love that it’s ready-to-use right out of the box. There’s no adjustments needed or controls to adjust. Just insert the battery, place it in your ear and you’re hearing things you haven’t heard in years.

Each battery has a long life of 10-12 days on one tiny cell and when it starts to get low, you’ll hear a subtle low-battery signal alert just before it dies out.

You can take The BEAN with you everywhere you go. It’s so tiny, even the leather storage case is small enough to fit inside your pocket, handbag or briefcase. No one will even know you have it!

The BEAN starter kit comes with each of the following:

  • The BEAN quiet sound amplifier
  • 7 eartips in different sizes/materials
  • Package of batteries (#10 zinc-air)
  • Filter tool and extra filters
  • Leather case

You can purchase the kit in a single device ($375.00) OR as a pair (you get two BEAN amplifiers) for $$700.00.

The BEAN is available in 3 attractive colors; Platinum, Brushed Gold, and Bronze.

If you’re ready to tell Charlie Brown’s teacher to hit the road and start hearing what you’ve been missing, I highly recommend you check out The BEAN!
