If you’re as big a fan of Disney’s Monsters Inc. as I am, I’m sure you rushed out to the theater as soon as Monsters University premiered.
In Monsters Inc., my favorite character, Mike Wazowski was a real hoot. Sure Sully was adorable (although scary at times) but I couldn’t help but root for Mike, the underdog. That little one-eyed cretin had me from the start. hehee!
Monsters University carries on with those same beloved characters but takes a look back in time… way WAY back in time to show you just how a monster becomes a “scarer”— a very important, and highly sought after position.
The film begins with an elementary schooler named Mike Wazowski who’s headed with his classmates on a field trip to Monsters Incorporated. Oh wow are they all excited, especially Mike. Too bad he’s SO tiny and unliked by the other kids. While trying to get a good look at the scare floor, he’s pushed to the back of the group. Poor little guy!
Well, not for long, Mike crawls underneath everyone and slips away to one of the human children’s doors. Uh oh, he’s NOT supposed to be there! After viewing a full grown monster in action he exits the door wearing a huge grin. Now THAT is what Mike wants to be when HE grows up— a Scarer!
Disney fast forwards to a teenage, braces wearing, pimple covered Mike Wazowski as he’s stepping off the bus to attend Monsters University where he will hopefully earn the degree of Scarer— for the position he’s dreamed of all his life.
Once he’s all settled into his dorm room Mike is almost immediately introduced to James P. Sullivan, that big furry blue and pink natural-born scarer monster who starts off as a foe and ultimately becomes Mike’s good friend.
Speaking of Sully, that big guy with the well-known family name steps in with a big head. He feels he’s “got this” and doesn’t study. Well, his instructors prove that to be a good Scarer you have to have more than a scary face. Ugh, although Mike has studied hard, he’s just not scary enough. That’s when Sully AND Mike are both kicked out of the scaring program and forced to prove their worth before being let back in.
To get in they have to participate (as a sorority team) in a multitude of challenges. Whoever’s team is still, um, standing, wins and earns a degree in scaring. Will Mike and Sully’s nerdy team, and their competitive spirit be #1 and earn that degree? You’ll just have to watch and see (if you haven’t already)!
Competitive they certainly ARE!
