When it comes to cars I’m pretty good at knowing what make and model they are, even from a distance— especially muscle cars. I love them!
But what’s hiding under the hood is a whole different story. hehee!
That’s why I’ve always left the maintenance to my hubby and now that my son Derek has an Automobile Electronics Degree under his belt and education in working on vehicles he will be either taking over doing the regular maintenance or assisting my hubby when the time comes.
Speaking of maintenance, with all of the driving we have been doing this Summer already, it’s about time to change the oil in all 4 vehicles. Hubby used to take our 2 vehicles to a service station when the oil and filters needed replacing but it became much more expensive so he began doing it himself.
Now that there are 4 (a van, truck, Mustang and Tiburon) outside, it’s definitely much more cost effective to buy the materials and do it ourselves.
Ever wondered how the motor oil used by service stations compared with what you can buy off store shelves? I do! I mean you would think that (being the licensed installers they are) they would want to use good quality materials so you’ll return in the future but how can you be sure?
Well, that’s where MOM comes in. MOM being “Motor Oil Matters” — a new consumer education and industry watchdog program by the American Petroleum Institute. The program was established to stress that Service-Locators can be quick to offer discounted services to consumers who are looking to reduce their automotive maintenance costs.
It can’t be stressed enough to make sure that your service provider (if you’re not doing the work yourself) is using quality motor oil in your vehicle BEFORE you make the decision to go with a cheaper deal.
If you spend a lot of time in your vehicle and value it (being that it gets you from point A to B as needed) you certainly don’t want to make the mistake of thinking you’re saving a few bucks, only to find out later that motor oil caused some high dollar damage!
Arm yourself first with knowledge. And when you head to that service station ask lots of questions!!! Plus, take along the checklist you see below.
View and print the MOM-checklist here!
HERE’S SOME IMPORTANT THINGS TO CONSIDER:
That’s a whole lot of vehicles and consumers to help out, don’t you think? Wow, and many of those problems could be avoided just by using the right kind of motor oil. Prevention is the key!
Something I always “preach” is… cheaper isn’t always the better deal. In the long run it could cost you a whole lot more. Knowledge is best so if you aren’t the automotive guru like some people I know, let MOM teach you what you need to know because as we all know… MOM knows best!
