I can still remember the first boat my dad ever bought. It was a fishing boat — just big enough for my parents, my sisters and me. It was also the first boat I had ever been on.
To be honest, when dad decided to take us out on a fishing trip I was quite nervous. I had no idea what to expect and although I learned to swim at the age of 3, I still disliked deep water. I was petrified of it literally.
See, my sisters got this bright idea when I was taking swimming lessons to harass me on the day I was to take my first dive off the deep end (12 feet). The movie Jaws was popular then and as I was about to bounce off the diving board, my sisters started yelling “Jaws is in there… Jaws is in there.” Well, this petite little 3 year old was not about to be eaten by a huge great white shark so, I absolutely refused to take a step off that board. I was no dummy. hahaa!
Sure, the movie was about a fake shark and I was naive to my sisters fibs but that fear of deep water began and to this day, it still creeps me out. BUT, once I got out on my dads boat and realized that nothing bad was going to happen, and I was catching fish… well, I was “hooked”.
My dad wound up selling that boat but a few years ago he purchased a speed boat and I have to tell you I LOVE IT!!! Of course dad splurged on the motor and that thing hauls, umm, some butt. hehee! His favorite part of the ride is going super fast and then turning the wheel so we all “catch the wave”. lol. Of course we get soaked but it’s all in fun.
Oh, and dad has a built-in radio too. His favorite tunes are nothing but the oldies. Ahh, that sure takes me back. I grew up listening to the golden oldies songs and to be honest I like them. They get my booty moving to the beat instantly. hahaa!
I have yet to get on an air tube or water ski but I’m sure I’ll get up the nerve… some day.
Boating is a whole lot of fun, even for kids. Plus it’s an affordable way (just the cost of gas) to spend quality time with your family and friends. It’s a great way to see new sights, catch some fish or just sit back, relax and catch some rays. Just be sure and use sunblock because when the sun beats down on that water it reflects and you can get one horrible sunburn.
Have YOU been boating this year? If not, what are you waiting for?
