I think we can all agree it’s never too early to teach your kids about the importance of saving money! The key, I have found, to getting your kids to really pay attention to this lesson is to make it fun.

For example, ever since we got my son a GIANT porcelain pig bank, he’s been on a constant hunt for loose change so he can make a deposit. It’s amazing the amount of excitement a single penny can stir up in a 3 year old. This has inspired me to see just what other fun “banks” are out there.

Here are some of my favorites!

Uncommon Goods has an awesome piggy bank with a funnel at the top which allows kids to quickly deposit their change by the fistful!

Guluck.com allows kids to do their “banking” online. Friends and family can even send money directly to their bank for birthdays, holidays, etc. So fun!

Pbs.org has a great tutorial for making your own piggy bank out of a plastic water bottle!

Kelleys Paper Crafts has a really cute selection of personalized wooden banks. They make such a great gift!

Hearthsong sells miniature mailbox banks. This is actually a throw back to 1984 because I specifically remember getting one of these from my grandparents for my birthday. I should have kept it!

  • It’s such a good lesson for kids to learn! These are great ideas to make it easier and more fun!

  • I started teaching both of my kids to save at a young age, it is a great thing for them to learn.

  • Michele says:

Teaching them young certainly helps! I kind of like the piggy bank with the funnel-especially for very young children. Of course I really like the idea of making a piggy bank out of a used soda bottle (reuse reuse reuse)-that way they can see the money accumulating!

The pig with the funnel is a cute and useful idea! My 2 year old has his own piggy bank and he knows that when it gets full we have to take the money to the ‘big bank’. I cannot wait for him to start doing chores to earn his money and then taking it to the store to buy his own items!

  • Kelly R says:

My daughter had a piggy bank when she was young and she would always look in my purse for loose change..

  • I personally think it’s SO important to start kids off learning about and managing money at an early age. Looking at all my friends and people my age, it’s amazing how many of them don’t know how to do the simplest things when it comes to money!

These are all super cute, especially that make your own piggy bank ^.^

  • Michelle E says:

I agree about teaching kids to save while young. It creates healthy habits.

  • What cute ideas! I love the pig and the funnel idea! So creative, and a wonderful idea!

  • Diane @ Me, Him And The Cats says:

My grandmother and I used to make banks out of milk cartons! I would get to decortae it and any loose change they found in their home, they would put in my bank!

  • Kelly F. says:

Awesome information, I appreciate it!! I will definatly try to teach my little one while shes still young!!

  • I love that little mini mailbox! I remember my first bank was a dog named Rusty :) It sure is hard teaching kids to save when they love to spend!!
