As part of our ‘getting the house prepared for sale’ to-do list, I knew I wanted to clean out each and every cabinet in my kitchen, including the pantry and reorganize each and every item.
Now this is certainly a larger task than it may seem because in MY kitchen, there isn’t a whole lot of storage space which is one reason I’ve wanted to move in the first place. It gets pretty tiring when I’m in the middle of cooking, only to realize I can’t find something I’m looking for. Or to open a cabinet and have a food or cookware item or pile of items fall out at me.
I literally got a huge bump on my head once while I was standing near my range. In the middle of cooking I needed a casserole dish that’s located just to the right of the stove. I opened the wall cabinet door, went to grab the dish and down came my ceramic turkey platter — hitting me on the head. Oh boy did that hurt! It didn’t break the platter though but my head had a large bump for quite some time.
These are the things I’ve been dealing with in my kitchen for over 12 years now. I love to cook but I’m really getting stressed and it’s making me dislike cooking as much. And so, it’s time for me to move on. I need a larger kitchen with more cabinets and more counter top space so I can get back to doing what I loved so much.
In the meantime I need to organize what I have, making it much easier on me until we can find a larger kitchen.
For this kitchen project I decided to start with my closet pantry. It’s literally busting at the seams with food, cookware, my Kitchenaid attachments and more. I’m certainly glad this thing has had a door to hide the clutter. haha! Ok, that sounds bad.
To tackle this project I knew I needed more shelves but rather than head to the hardware store to buy wood, screws and stain or paint and attach some to the walls (since we’re moving) I opted to go with an over the door storage rack– something temporary that I could take with me when we move. And where would I find such a product, why Spacesavers.com, of course. They have everything you need for any kind of organization, in any part of your home and beyond.
After surfing the Spacesavers site, and measuring my pantry door, I opted for the Over the Door Storage Rack w/ Adjustable Shelves. It provides 6 vinyl coated wire shelves in 3 different sizes that allow you to adjust them to your needs. This is exactly what I needed!
For me to say that shipping was quick is an understatement. I received my new rack the very next day. Wow, that was awesome! And of course I didn’t waste any time in putting it together either.
There’s a little bit of assembly required but because I was hanging mine over the door, no tools were needed. One of the great things about this product is that the shelves can be attached to a wall in your garage, laundry room, basement, anywhere you need extra storage.
As with any project I laid out all of the parts and verified that all necessary pieces were included in the box. Yep, ok onto the next step.
One thing I do want to mention is that I didn’t find a step-by-step instruction manual in the box. But, by looking at the images on the side of the box you can pretty much determine what goes where. It’s only a few pieces so no big deal. It literally only took me a few minutes to put it together and decide where I wanted my shelves positioned.
1.) Attach over door brackets & mounting tracks with c-shaped connectors
2.) Attach shelves to mounting tracks
And here’s the finished rack…
Now to tackle all of that food that’s stacked way too high!
First I need to show you what the inside of the pantry and another food cabinet looked like before I removed anything (although it’s a bit embarrassing!).
1.) Food pantry 2.) Floor cabinet
As you can see, our food was literally stacked and stacked to the point of falling over whenever something was removed from either cabinet. There was really no organization there whatsoever.
This totally makes me look bad but honestly, from time to time I DID go through and organize these spaces but after everyone else in the house picked through day by day, they slowly went back to becoming a total mess.
But now look at how organized everything is…
1.) Pantry w/ storage rack 2.) Floor cabinet with less clutter
From the pictures it may not look extremely organized but believe me, it’s a huge improvement. You can actually see the shelve that’s inside the floor cabinet now. Yes, it’s been there all along! haha.
I still want to add a few baskets or organizers inside the pantry so I can separate foods such as cereals, pastas and rice, breads, etc. but it’s coming along. It’s amazing what one product can do. Now to move onto those cabinets full of cookware. Ugh!
How Does It Measure Up?
The Over the Door Storage Rack measures 54.5″ H x 17.5″ W x 7″ D. The door hangars fits most standard doors up to 1.375″ thick.
