It’s almost that time again… when we change our clocks back one hour and replace those smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries. This year it falls on November 4th, so mark your calendars!
This date also marks the 25th anniversary of the annual Change Your Clock Change Your Battery® program created by Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC). The purpose of this program is, in working with local fire departments nationwide, Energizer and the IAFC want to raise awareness on the importance of working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in helping families stay safe in their homes.
Sadly thirty-eight percent of fatal fire injuries occur in homes with no smoke alarms, while 24 percent occur in homes in which at least one smoke alarm is present but fails to operate, frequently due to dead or missing batteries.*
At this time of year, when families are heating up their homes with wood burning or nature gas fireplaces, gas or electric furnaces or even propane heaters, it’s extremely important to be prepared for an unexpected fatality such as a home fire. No one wants to lose a family member due to such a horrendous event, and since prevention can be as simple as replacing a few batteries, we all should take heed and remember this quick and easy household chore each and every time the clocks are moved forward AND back for daylight savings time.
