What’s YOUR new years resolution? I know you’ve probably got one.
The most popular one, as we all know, is weight loss and the choice to eat healthier. I know that’s MY resolution… or it has been for the last several months.
The way to keeping with our resolutions (no matter what the resolution is) is basically two things — motivation and commitment. Without those you are headed for failure. Motivation gives us the drive to reach our goal and commitment is necessary because if we don’t commit to work on our resolutions daily, at some point we will give up.
The key to weight loss is exercising in some form, basically just keeping active, even if it’s getting up and walking for 10 minutes. And choosing healthier food options for our plate.
“You are what you eat!” — I’m sure you’ve heard that before and honestly it’s true. If you grab fatty, high calorie foods all the time, you’re going to be unhealthy. But if you opt for more fruits and veggies as well as lean meats and whole grains, you’re less likely to be overweight and lacking energy.
I, myself, try to choose more foods that come from the farm than those convenience foods because they typically contain less fat and calories plus they have more vitamins and nutrients that our bodies need.
When I found out recently that Learning Resources carried Healthy Helpings, a MyPlate game, I was very intrigued and couldn’t wait to try it out. It’s honestly a great learning tool for not only children but adults as well because it teaches you how to choose the right foods in all the categories necessary to get the daily allowance your body needs to stay healthy.
What’s In The Box?
If you’re not familiar with MyPlate, it’s an online tool, created by the USDA, that illustrates the five food groups that are the building blocks for a healthy diet using a familiar image — a place setting for a meal. You have the ability to learn how to put together a healthy plate on their website, similar to the Healthy Helpings game, but Learning Resources has made the process much funner in designing a game so that children can learn this important and valuable lesson, even at an early age.
During game play, a player uses the spinner to select a food group. The player then chooses a food card that matches that food group and places it on their “plate”. Then the next player takes a turn. The game continues until someone fills their plate with a complete and balanced meal. And the first one to do so wins!
To help children and adults in placing the food cards correctly, they are color coded on the back, taking the guesswork out of where they go on your “plate” — fruits are red, grains are orange, vegetables are green, proteins are purple and dairy is blue.
Each food card is also adorned with real-life photos of the foods they are portraying. Mmm, lots of my favorites! hehee.
Not only is this game fun but educational. I love that it teaches such valuable information without being boring. Kids love it and hubby and I do too. I think it’s great that even young children can learn how to eat healthy — bringing this fun game to the real table. And it’s something they can use throughout their entire lives.
The Healthy Helpings MyPlate game retails for $16.99 and can be purchased directly at www.learningresources.com.
If you’re looking for a super fun, and affordable yet highly educational game for your child(ren) ages 4 and up, I highly recommend the Healthy Helpings game. Your kids will definitely be excited about nutrition!
