Every new, or experienced parent knows that when baby comes… so does a ton of baby items.

From furniture to clothing and diapers — even little booties, your house winds up filled to the brim with everything necessary, at least for the first year of baby’s life.

Of course things like bottle warmers and cushy pillows are nice to have but there are more important products that are an absolute must… no doubt about it.

It’s inevitable that at some point you and your new bundle of joy will travel. The first time being upon leaving the hospital. And it’s pretty pertinent that you use a safe and secured infant car seat to take baby to his or her new home.

Something else you’re going to want to have on-hand is a quality stroller for shopping trips, walks around your neighborhood, or visits to the park. Babies love to go sight seeing!

If you’re an expecting parent I’m sure you’re probably inundated with questions as to which brands and products are best. Well, let me introduce you to Eddie Bauer. More than likely you’ve heard of the brand but did you know that they have crafted a full line of infant products for parents who want and expect the best?

One thing you’ll notice when shopping for baby gear is how expensive everything can be. But becoming a new parent shouldn’t mean nearly investing in a company just to get well built necessities for your infant. That’s why I love Eddie Bauer!

We recently had the opportunity to check out the Trailmaker Travel System in the Fairview pattern and I can’t say enough how much we love it!

The first thing you notice with the Trailmaker Travel System is how attractive the Fairview fabric is. I’m not typically a big fan of plaid but this is actually quite nice and the splash of red trim makes it even more eye catching.

No assembly necessary on the car seat.

I was very pleased to find, upon removing the contents of the large box, that most of the parts were already put together. What a time saver — love it! I also appreciated the fact that no tools were required for assembly. None!

Needless to say I assembled the stroller myself. It went pretty quick and painless — just install the front wheels which snap right into place, attach the rear wheels to the axle with cotter pins and attach to the stroller frame, push the center wheel covers into place, then add the front tray with cup holder (if desired). That is it. Easy peasy.

Now onto the fun part…. the features. My favorite part of the infant car seat, besides the appearance, is how it can be used not only as a car seat but as a carrier and an additional seat on the stroller. With the click of a button located on the rear of the seat, you can transfer the seat from it’s base in your vehicle to the frame of the stroller and back again.

The side impact protection and 5-point harness offers peace of mind in knowing your child is safe. I really like that the Trailmaker car seat comes with several different slots — the seat basically “grows” with your child. You can move the straps higher and higher as baby becomes toddler.

When my first child was born I had much more gear than what is required nowadays thanks to manufacturers such as Eddie Bauer. With Dani I had a car seat, separate carrier and a stroller. Now, thanks to technology, the car seat has multiple uses. It can be used not only in your vehicle but it can release from it’s base so you can transport baby without disturbing him or her because the main portion of the car seat can also be used as a carrier.

And to make things even better and easier, this same seat can be used in place of the stroller seat. So, if you have a baby who is typically fussy and hard to get to sleep and you don’t want to wake him or her after she’s finally dozed off, she can go from car to stroller with just one click of a button. I absolutely LOVE that!

What I love most about the stroller is surprisingly how lightweight it is. I’ve reviewed other strollers in the past and this one has to be the most lightweight of them all.

Another positive feature is the “slide and squeeze” folding/unfolding mechanism. With the squeeze of a ‘trigger’ you can go from compactly folded to open and ready-to-use in a jiffy.

It’s almost a one-handed operation!

Moms and dads will love the storage compartment and two cup holders that are conveniently located up along the handle. The compartment makes a great place to store your keys and cell phone while you and baby explore the world.

Speaking of storage, there’s also a large basket located beneath the stroller and it’s the perfect size to accommodate a diaper bag, and/or mom’s purse (depending on size). We all know that a diaper bag and essentials go anywhere baby goes so it’s always nice having a place to store them out-of-sight when you’re on the go.

Look mom, you can put lots of toys in there!

Safety is obviously something that Eddie Bauer doesn’t lack or skimp on in the baby gear department. Aside from the 5-point harness system, the stroller also includes two brakes which are engaged with the push of a foot. And for easier handling when you’re traveling on uneven surfaces such as gravel, there are two levers located on the front wheels. Push those down and locked into place to keep the wheels from swiveling. This way the stroller isn’t trying to go off in different directions when you’re trying to walk up an incline or across a parking lot or field.

For a more comfortable ride, the stroller seat adjusts up and reclines back with the squeeze of the release clip located behind the seat. And there’s also a foot rest for your child once he or she grows and sits more up-right.

The child’s tray can be added once baby is up and alert. It’s a great place for small toys or favorite snacks. And what a great way to keep baby entertained while mom and dad shop. This item is attached by pushing the tabs into the slots until you hear a ‘click’. To remove the tray just push the buttons on either side and slide the tray out.

And lastly, I want to mention how well the Fairview stroller folds up. It’s not big and bulky like other strollers I’ve owned. As lightweight and compact as this one is, it’s really grown on me and becoming one of my favorites. I’m only 5′ 3″ and although I’m pretty strong for a girl my size, lugging a big, bulky, heavy stroller while trying to keep an eye on young children is not something I want to do. Thanks to Eddie Bauer, I don’t have to.

Upgrades I would love to see ~

As with any product I review, although I do have my favorites, there still might be room for improvement just to make them even more “WOW!”

I would absolutely love to see more padding added to the car seat as well as the stroller. Considering the possibly lengthy amount of time baby will spend in these products, a comfy seat is extremely important. Also, by way of comfort, the visors on the Trailmaker system are some of the shortest ones I have seen. Keeping sun rays out of baby’s eyes is also important and keeps them happy, so lengthening those a bit would be much appreciated.

For more of a storage stand point, I would love to see an added latch. Although the Trailmaker stroller folds up quite well, it doesn’t necessarily stay completely compact because there is nothing holding it in place. A latch on the side would correct this.

And lastly, the user guide is missing installation instructions on the car seat when using it in an automobile. It does include user instructions when assembling the car seat to the stroller but says nothing about how to install it in a vehicle. Considering many new parents as well as many experienced parents are clueless in this department, the inclusion of step-by-step instructions would be an absolute plus (not to mention lifesaver).

Aside from these things, the Fairview Trailmaker Travel System is an absolute great buy for the price considering the multiple uses you get!
