Young kids are great at using their imaginations, especially when it comes to play time. I’ve always enjoyed just sitting back and watching as they role play.
It’s funny how you can almost see yourself in your kids because, well, they ARE like sponges and absorb all kinds of information, then act it out during play and every day life.
One type of toy that I’ve always gotten a lot of enjoyment out of with my kids is building blocks — big ones, little ones and even in between. There’s just so much you can do with them — so many things you can create. The possibilities are endless. Oh, and you don’t have to be 5 years old in order to be entertained by them. hehee!
We recently had the opportunity to try out the MEGA Bloks Squad Fire Patrol Station 956 Piece set and oh my was it loads of fun!
Did you catch the part where I said there were 956 pieces? This in itself was a project. hahaa! It took us 3 days to put this thing together but stepping back and looking at the finished project, we are pretty impressed. It’s REALLY cool!!!
Building an actual town or in this case, fire station, is like putting a puzzle together. If you love puzzles, you will love this set.
I will say that if you don’t pay really close attention to the directions and the size and shape of each specific piece, you can easily mess things up. There are pieces that look similar so paying attention to details is very important unless you are just ‘doing your own thing’ and making it whatever you want.
We did wind up with some excess pieces and I’m guessing MEGA Bloks meant for that to happen because I went back through, step by step, and everything was where it should be. So, there’s no leaning tower or tireless truck or anything like that. hahaa!
The first item we put together was the Fire Ladder Truck. What fire station would be complete without one of those? It’s actually what comes to mind first when I think of fire station.
After ‘ooh-ing and ahh-ing” over our newest creation, we assembled the rescue carrier, the 4×4 truck, and moved on to the station itself.
After getting halfway through building the fire station, I realized that a few of the pieces were incorrect (since other pieces weren’t fitting correctly) so we had to go back through the steps and locate the right parts. I should also mention that building the fire station on a carpeted floor is NOT a good idea! It doesn’t provide a stable base and the pieces don’t stay put once it reaches a certain height. Silly me didn’t think of that because assembling the vehicles was quick and went smoothly. Not so much with the fire station. I finally wised up and moved the station over to our dinner table and after that we had no problem.
The last build was the rescue chopper. This, as with the other vehicles, was really easy to put together.
To make the fire station and all of it’s accessories look more realistic, we applied the stickers. I really love that each one is numbered to correspond in the guide with each particular item that it goes with. It even shows you exactly where to put them. A few stickers are applied during the building process of the fire station because they are in tighter quarters and you don’t want to have to disassemble it in order to place the stickers later.
What do you think? Turned out great, huh?
Sure there’s tons of little pieces that come in the box but look at what all you get for this extremely affordable kit. And something else you can’t see… the doors to the station and vehicles open. The ladders on the fire truck go up and down, and swivel around. And yes, that propeller on the chopper as well as the tires on all vehicles spin around. Oh, and so does the steering wheel inside the 4×4 truck. Cool stuff!
The only thing I noticed missing in this playset (not intentionally) is a fire pole and of course you will want something to store your “gazillion” pieces in. hehee!
The MEGA Bloks Squad Fire Patrol Station 956 piece set has an MSRP of $39.99 and is available in stores such as Walmart, and Toys R Us, as well as online at www.amazon.com. Prices may vary per store.
