Pet Food Recall Alert!

Posted in: FYI Articles,Pets,Shopping / Moneysavers/Gifts |

WellPet, makers of Wellness® natural pet foods, are voluntarily recalling some lots of their canned cat foods due to potentially insufficient amounts of vitamin B1 (also known as thiamine).

The lots involved in this voluntary recall are:

  • Wellness Canned Cat (all flavors and sizes) with best by dates from 14APR 13 through 30SEP13;
  • Wellness Canned Cat Chicken & Herring (all sizes) with best by date of 10NOV13 and 17NOV13.

If you have cat food from these lots, you should stop feeding it to your cats. You may call WellPet at 1-877-227-9587 to arrange for return of the product and reimbursement.

WellPet found through product quality testing that specific product runs of their Wellness canned cat food might contain less than adequate levels of thiamine (also known as Vitamin B1), so they decided to voluntarily recall them.

Therefore to avoid confusion and in an abundance of caution, they have decided to recall all canned cat products with the specific date codes noted above. Cats fed only product with inadequate levels of thiamine for several weeks may be at risk for developing a thiamine deficiency. If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency is typically reversible.

Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include loss of appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss. In advanced cases, signs may include ventroflexion (downward curving) of the neck, wobbly gait, falling, circling and seizures. If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency is typically reversible. You should contact your veterinarian immediately if your cat is displaying any of these signs.

No other Wellness products were impacted!

Very frustrating. I ONLY serve my 13 yr old cat Wellness canned – because I want him to have the “best” cat food! It is already way over priced at 1.59 a can which equals out to over $50 a month (with tax) for something that isn’t even good for him :( All of the cans on hand in my cabinet are dated to use by 13 Oct 13. However he just finished a case of canned food that did fall in those dates above and I am sure many other cases did too.

We will be switching as I also have my 2 little lap dogs on Wellness! Boo!

An owner of a pet specialty store told me a few months back that Wellness was not going to do their own processing and packing anymore. I guess this is what happens when you try to run things cheaper.

Thanks for the information, this is the very first that I have heard of this.

Thank you for posting! I appreciate you getting this out to your readers.

Blue Buffalo is a great pet food brand. We only feed out pets that. Our doggie eats Blue Buffalo for small breeds and our kitties eat the Blue Spa Select which is made by Blue Buffalo. The food is holistic. No added fillers, dyes, unnecessary junk. Our female cat Bella has allergies and she can’t eat the grocery store type foods so we spend more and buy strictly from our pet store. Our pets are very healthy and their coats are really soft and shiny. :D

Thank you. I am definitely planning a trip to the pet store to check out Blue Buffalo today.
We went with Wellness after reading everything about it and I liked that it didn’t contain by-products, corn, soy, etc.

I think this kind of news is frustrating because you “think” you are doing what is best and then a company lets you down and you start wondering what all these pet food companies are all about.

Thanks again, Dee. I am so glad you let us know.

I agree. I did a lot of research on the different foods and found that Blue Buffalo had exactly what I was looking for and nothing that I wasn’t. Our furbabies love this food. Especially the kitties. They clean their bowls every day. I don’t feed them wet food all the time but they get dry food every day and wet food as a treat. These two are definitely fed well, they’re not sickly looking at all. I believe they eat the salmon and rice variety.

thanks for the “heads up” we also feed the “Herd” lol :) Blue Buffalo <– they luv it!

Wow… I had no idea a company would recall based on what is NOT in their food, vs what IS in there (toxins, bacteria, etc).

Sorry you have to have that happen Coupons,…that is frustrating when you researched and paid good money to find what you THOUGHT was the best product for your pet.

B1 is the vitamin cats in particular lose when we feed them. We arent carnivores, they are. When they are fed with foods with a high ratio of cereals/grains they lack thiamine. Thats why if it is caught early it is entirely reversable in adults cats- it might not hold so true for kittens or queens.

*I had a whole thing written but know peoples opinions on whats best can be very strong :)
